The wooden corkscrew case protects the corkscrew from three risks: scratching the wooden handle from contact with other metal utensils in a drawer, accidentally opening the lever in a pocket or bag, and tarnishing of the stainless steel of the helix and lever from prolonged contact with moisture. The leather acts as a hygroscopic barrier—absorbing ambient moisture before it reaches the wood and metal. A dry case kept in a cellar at 75% humidity protects the tool for 48 to 72 hours before the leather becomes saturated.
